If the thought that Britney Spears is now officially in her Thrilling Thirties doesn't weird you out, I'm not really sure what to say to you. I may not be B's biggest fan, but good pop is good pop, and Britney has a bitching back catalgoue. We are teetering very close to Brit spending more years of her life in the spotlight than out of it -- she's a staple to the younger generation, a given, a part of history.
I was unsure which song to highlight as a tribute to Ms. Spears. "Everytime" is undoubtedly my favorite of her cuts for its raw honesty and rare vulnerable execution. "Toxic" is another fave for its sheer stickyness. "I'm A Slave 4 U" sonically stands apart from the rest of her material, and was a true introduction to "Adult" Britney.
But really, what better place is there to start than at the beginning? The School Girl Outfit. The Pig Tails. The now iconic, sex-soaked "Oh Baby Baby". It was the beginning of a Pop Empire. "...Baby One More Time" came down the radio pike in the fall of 1998. I was 11 years old. I didn't want to admit to it then, but it's affect on me musically was tantamount.
PS - It still blows my mind that this song was originally given to TLC (pre "No Scrubs").
PPS - This is a Universal Truth of Pop Addiction, but Mr. Max Martin, you are a God.
