[WGO] Estrella of the Radios

Retail tabulations currently rank an interchangeable top three for this week's Billboard 200, between last week's chart topper Rascal Flatts, the "Hannah Montana" film soundtrack and last week's debut of Day26's sophomore album, Forever In A Day.

For those of you who are curious as to why I'm changing up my "format" of my WGO posts -- it's because I feel like a lot of people do chart wrap ups and it's too difficult for me to always get in on time...so I'll talk about radio adds (since that seems to be less talked about) and talk about noteworthy items on the two big charts when they are pertinent...With that said:

Lady Gaga continues to be top champ at Top 40 with "Poker Face", but Black Eyed Peas remain a formiddable opponent with "Boom Boom Pow" zooming up to #3 (up from #8), with a spin increase rate of nearly 13%. Jesse McCartney's "How Do You Sleep" also continues to rise almost 8% up to #8 at Top 40 this week (#9 last week).

Although I despised it at first, Ciara & Justin Timberlake's "Love Sex Magic" is growing on me, but the public's opinion at Top 40 is still mixed. It sits at #14 at the moment, down from #11 last week, and sliding with a negative spin count of 4%. Not too shabby. Miley Cyrus on the other hand is seeing a positive shift for "The Climb", landing at #15 (up from #18 with 5.6% increased spins). I think her new country-ish style suits her.

3OH!3 is a name I keep hearing, but my feelings are still mixed with them. Their single "Don't Trust me" is definitely on a big upswing at Top 40 however, landing at #22, up from #24, but is seeing a supreme 18.5% spin increase this past week.

Of all of the potential songs on Flo Rida's recent release, "Sugar" is probably my least favorite. You'd think I'd adore it, especially since it features my girl Wynter Gordon on the hook, but there's something about that Eiffel 65 sample that rubs me the wrong way. I just can't get into it...That is most definitely NOT the opinion of most Top 40 listeners, however, as the song continues to grow this week, up to #23 from #27 with a spin increase of 44.5%!

Eminem's "We Made You" and Kelly Clarkson's "I Do Not Hook Up" both moved five spaces up on the Top 40 chart this week, sitting at #31 and #32 respectively, but it's their spin increase rate that grabs my attention, with 69.7% and 65.7%. P!NK's "Please Don't Leave Me" and Kanye West's "Paranoid" are also making pretty big strides on the lower half of the Top 40.

ATTENTION to you boyband nostagiacs out there - the boys of V Factory are knocking on the door of Top 40, with "Love Struck" landing at #42, gaining 40 spins this week to increase by 51.9%. I have to admit to you, I heard this song while eating a hamburger at Good Burger down in Union Square and almost started screaming. I was like, "Is this the radio? It's on the radio? Yay for pop music!" Direct quote.

ALSO - FYI: Kristinia DeBarge's "Goodbye" increased spins by a good 263% (no joke) this past week to sit at #45. And in other Top 40 news privy to Melismatic: MadCon's "Beggin'" holds static at #47 (despite slight negative spins) and my girls in The Veronicas take another crack at the American market after "Untouched" failed to be the hit it should have been with "Take Me On the Floor" landing at #49 (with a 26.9% positive spin increase).

Jamie Foxx's "Blame It" remains #1 on Rhythmic radio despite slipping ever so slightly in spins. #2-3 at Rhythmic remains static with Soulja Boy and Kid Cudi, but once again, BEP continues to gain momentum with their first Hot 100 #1, pushing up to #4 (from #6 last week) up by 7%.

Over at Alternative, Green Day have bust through with the first single "Know Your Enemy" from their upcoming release, debuting on the format at the #3 position, biting at the heels of Kings of Leon ("Use Somebody" at #1) and Anberlin ("Feel Good Drag" at #2). 311 is #7 this week, seeing significant spin increases this week at this format, up 31% with "Hey You". Also, Incubus clocks in at #10 with "Black Heart Inertia", up nearly 21%.

Over on the country format, Rascal Flatts "Here Comes Goodbye" slips to #2, Carrie Underwood's "I Told You So" is gains a notch to #4, Kellie Pickler's "Best Days of My Life" lands at #25 (up from #28 with a 9.5% spin increase), and my kids in Gloriana land at #28 with "Wild At Heart" climing from #34 at the rate of 16.4%. For those of you keeping score, Taylor Swift's latest single off Fearless, "You Belong With Me", makes an official debut on the Country radio chart this week with 73 spins, landing her at #40 (but will no doubt grow as the days go on...she is Taylor Swift, after all).

I like the new format, but I'm a radio news junkie, so it works. I heard V Factory a few times this weekend, and I'm fully on board. Madcon, too. Loved it last year, and I'm all into it again. I know it's not something most of my fellow bloggers get into, but I am loving the new Pitbull single, too. Everyone's got to have their guilty pleasures, I know.

What?! V Factory are actually getting played? Amazing and unexpected (much as I love it and think it's easily the best "young" boy band song the U.S. has had in years; I've got a lot of love for New Kids' "Twisted," too, which is the only reason for the qualification) news...I may have to start leaving my radio on all the time now just so I can have that burst of excitement from finally hearing it coming out of something other than my iPod.

John, I love the new Pitbull single, too!

Ditto liking the new format, too--it's a different take and one I want to hear.

PG, if you have Sirius, it's getting played on HitsOne. I'm trying to put into perspective how much I love it...way more than a man of my age probably should.

John - Me too! I always believed that Radio was the biggest harbinger of retail success, no matter it's "cultural" impact nowadays. I've yet to hear the Pitbull single -- I guess I have to check it out now! :) And there is no shame in anyone liking a boy band, no matter their age or gender. Keep telling yourself that. Good pop is good pop!

PPG - I know! I thought it was my ears! I just couldn't believe it. I agree that they have the best shot at success now that NLT has pretty much stalled all efforts...::sigh::...I'm glad you like the new formatting ideas. :)
