I always love it when other artists of the day jump on a particularly good song of the moment and cover it, even when the song still popular. In recent memory, songs like "Crazy" (Gnarls Barkley) and "Umbrella" (Rihanna) seemed like staple tracks for an artist of any genre to cover.
One of the new artists that I definitely support, K'NAAN, has jumped on using this idea to his advantage by covering Coldplay's hit "Viva La Vida" on his current concert tour. K'NAAN is a hip hop MC from Somalia, with a sound that is a mixture of Kanye West and Common. So the idea of him covering Coldplay sounds a bit absurd...until you hear it.
